The 1940's Radio Hour
November 25 - December 23, 2011
The 1940’s Radio Hour
Written by Walton Jones
Directed by Bev Newcomb-Madden
It’s Christmastime
in 1942. On a cold and snowy evening in New York,
a close-knit group of entertainers at the WOV radio station—all heading
somewhere else—are broadcasting the final holiday variety
show for the troops overseas. Patriotic, sentimental, and overwhelmingly
nostalgic, this holiday production—with songs including Strike Up the Band, I’ll Be
Seeing You, and Have Yourself a Merry
Little Christmas—is reminiscent of an era long since passed but never
completely forgotten.

Shadow-interpreted theater utilizes specially trained American Sign
Language (ASL) interpreters to perform as “shadows” on stage alongside actors.
Shadow theater marries sign language with choreographed movement, allowing the
sign language to become a seamless part of the theater experience. In this way,
audience members who are deaf, hard of hearing or language delayed can
simultaneously see and “hear” the complete theater performance in the same way
as hearing audiences. Shadow theater is also enjoyed by hearing audiences as an
innovative art form and educational opportunity. Similar to watching a film
with subtitles, viewers benefit from a rich bilingual experience and gain an
appreciation for another language.
